How To: Read Crochet Instructions Correctly

Read Crochet Instructions Correctly

Reading crochet instructions for beginners isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. But fear not, I'm here to help! :)

Follow these easy steps to make sure you follow crochet instructions properly:

Step 1 Select a pattern that matches your abilities.

Crochet patterns come with different levels of difficulty (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Be sure to select a pattern that matches your crochet abilities. Make sure you have the correct materials. Pay special attention to crochet needle size.

Step 2 Pay attention to the gauge.

In crochet (and knitting) patterns, gauge refers to the number of stitches or rows per inch. As you crochet, it is important to periodically check your gauge.

Example gauge:

    Gauge: 4 sc = 1 inch

This indicates that in every inch, there should be four single-crochets (sc).

Many people have different styles of crochet. If you aren't getting the correct gauge, try adjusting the hook size of your crochet needle.

Step 3 Read the pattern.

Now we get into reading the actual pattern. But before we begin, I'll explain a few crochet basic abbreviations and stitches. Read the headlines for abbreviations, and watch the videos for examples of how to do them.

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double-crochet

sl st = slip stitch

beg = beginning

Step 4 Practice following crochet instructions.

It is now time to practice following a few crochet instructions.

Row 1: ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in every ch across, turn. (9 sc)

This pattern basically says to make a chain of ten stitches. Once you have made a chain of 10 stitches, the pattern says to "single-crochet in 2nd chain from hook". This just means to make a single-crochet in the 9th stitch.  From then on, the pattern says to single-crochet the entire way. Once you have crocheted the entire way, simply turn the piece over.

Row 2: ch 3, dc in 1st sc, dc all the way, turn (9 dc)

This is almost like row 1, except you double-crochet.
